A group of women at work in a paddy field at Dokmoka, some 82 km from Diphu, district headquarter of Karbi Anglong district, Assam on July 10, 2009. The overall monsoon rainfall this year in the Northeast has been deficient by 48 per cent. The shortage has severely affected sowing. Till July 9, paddy was sown in 38.14 lakh hectare against 51.80 lakh ha in the corresponding period last year – a shortage of 13.66 lakh ha.
