Lakhimpur flood project can be replicated

Entry added by NortheastUnlimited on June 19, 2009
Affected districts:

If Lakhimpur's Advanced Warning System for Flood Disaster (AWSFD) manages to be a success, then the project will be replicated across the country. The project was set up following a meeting of the North Eastern Council, North East Space Application Centre, Brahmaputra Board, NEEPCO, Central Water Commission and the Assam secretariat on April 30 in view of the floods in Lakhimpur last year.

The project with the help of NESAC would get satellite imagery support and warn about cloud formations, and relay the data to flood emergency control rooms at the NEC headquarters in Shilling. Based on the warning, the Assam government and the Lakhimpur district administration would take preemptive measures on pre-flood risk reduction.

The metereological department, CWC, NEEPCO and Assam Water Resources Department would inform control rooms of any breach in embankments on the catchment areas of Ranganadi and Subansiri.
