Flood havoc in Assam, nine swept away by turbulent rivers

Affected districts:

Dhubri: Five of a family including three women drown in Gangadhar river when their boat capsized near Agomoni on May 27. Three others were rescued.

Barpeta: Body of a villager swept away by Borolia river found at Tatarkuchi on May 28. Another swept away by Kaldia river.

Sonitpur: Bodies of two villagers swept away by Jia Bhoroli river found at Pachmile.

Overall situation: Rivers in Baksa, Barpeta, Sonitpur and Dhubri in spate following release of water from Kurichu dam in Bhutan. Water released through three sluices upstream of the rivers. District authorities caught unawares. Over 150 villages affected in flash floods caused by Beki river. Bridge over Beki at Donaghat damaged. Waters in Beki, Borolia, Jia Bhoroli and Gangadhar rivers receding, but situation grim.

Barpeta: Over 1.5 lakh people of 300 villages hit by floods for third day on May 28. Flood waters wash away portion of Barpeta Road - Bahbari road leaning to Manas National Park. Approaches to a concrete bridge at Domnighat over Beki washed away. Surface communication hit.

Lakhimpur: Some areas of district submerged on May 27 following release of water by NEEPCO into Ranganadi and Dikrong rivers. Situation under control, but cause panic. Water level of Dikrong crossed danger level at Bihpuria. Water released by NEEPCO's Ranganadi Hydro Power Plant at Yazali in Arunachal Pradesh.

Breaches in embankments caused by last year's floods yet to be repaired. Six breaches on Ranganadi plugged, five remain.

Tinsukia: Village called New Maria Basti inagurated in Doomdooma revenue circle. Bakjan Gutibari Maria Basti was washed away by Brahmaputra in 2004.
