Assam flood-preparedness yet to be geared up

Entry added by NortheastUnlimited on May 25, 2009

Assam: State not yet fully geared to deal with floods. Delay in release of funds and lack of proper coordination between government departments concerned said to be mean reasons for delay.

Government released funds under Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) for flood damage repairs under Water Resources Department and Public Works Department only in February 2009. Early release could have expedited relief works. Assam to procure hundred mechanised boats for rescue and relief operations. Inland Water Transport department entrusted with job. Boats to be at disposal of Deputy Commissioners. Extra provisions for fuel not yet made. Assam government to take over persons under a UNDP scheme from June. Proposal still pending with Finance Department.
