Hruso

Facts:
  • Population: 4,000 (1997 Breton).
  • Region: Arunachal Pradesh, Kameng District, Thrizino circle, 15 villages, mainly in villages of Dijungania, Jamiri, Puragaon; between Monpa on the west and the Tani languages on the east.
  • Alternatives: Aka, Hrusso, Angka, Angkae, Tenae
  • Dialects: Hruso, Levai (Bangru). No wider affiliation within Tibeto-Burman is apparent. These varieties are sometimes grouped under Tibeto-Burman as 'Hruish'. The names listed as dialects may be separate languages.
  • Classification: Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Unclassified
  • Language use: Many are fluent in Miji, Monpa, Assamese, Hindi (Singh).
  • Comments: Aka means 'painted'. Aka has 2 ethnic groups, Kavatsun and Kutsun, and an additional subdivision called Miri-Akas on the other side of the Kaya River, known as 'Khrome'. They speak Miri, not Hruso. Probably not the same as plains Miri or Hill Miri (Sinha 62). Mountain slope. Forest. 947 to 1,893 meters. Swidden agriculturalists. Traditional religion, syncretism, Buddhist
