Adi, Galo

Facts:    
  • Population: 150,000 (2004). A few older adult monolinguals.
  • Region: Arunachal Pradesh, West Siang, East Siang, Dibang Valley (south), Lohit (east), Changlang (northeast), and some in Upper Subansiri (west) districts.
  • Alternatives: Adi, Adi-Gallong, Adi-Galo, Gallong, Galong
  • Dialects: Reportedly intelligible with other Adi dialects but they are sociolinguistically distinct.
  • Classification: Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, North Assam, Tani
  • Language use: Used in the village, home. All ages. Padam has not been accepted as the standard Adi dialect by the Galo or other groups. Nearly all speak some Hindi and Assamese. Hindi is used with the military. English is spoken by the educated and the young.
  • Language development: Literacy rate in second language: 40%. Roman script. Radio programs.
  • Comments: A Scheduled Tribe in India. SOV; postpositions; genitives after noun heads; articles, adjectives, numerals before and after noun heads; relatives after noun heads or without; question word initial; maximum prefixes 2, maximum suffixes 4–5; affixes indicate case of noun phrase; there are causatives and comparatives; CV, CVC, CVV patterns; nontonal. Agriculturalists. Traditional religion, Hindu, Christian.
