The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has inscribed 788 properties on the World Heritage List (611 cultural, 154 natural and 23 mixed properties in 134 States Parties). "Natural heritage" refers to outstanding physical, biological and geological formations, habitats of threatened species of animals and plants and areas with scientific, conservation or aesthetic value. Two Northeast protected areas (PAs) figure in the WHS list in terms of natural heritage.
