Bishnupur district of Manipur with its headquarters at Bishnupur (27 km from Imphal) was opened on May 25, 1983. Stretching between 93.43º E and 93.53º E Longitudes and 24.18º N and 24.44º N Latitudes, the total geographical area of the district is 530 sq km. It is bounded on the north by Imphal West district, on the south by Churachandpur district, on the east by Imphal and Thoubal districts.
According to the 1991 Census, the total population of the district is 1,80,773 (91,125 males and 89,648 females) having a density of 341 per sq km and literacy of 45% (56% for males and 34% females). There are 64 revenue villages in the district.
The district is divided into three sub-divisions: (i) Bishnupur sub-division with its HQ at Bishnupur, (ii) Moirang sub-division (opened on December 12, 1983) with its HQ at Moirang, and (iii) Nambol sub-division with its HQ at Nambol. There are six SDC circles in the district. Nambol, Oinam and Bishnupur circles are situated in Bishnupur sub-division. Ningthoukhong, Moirang and Kumbi circles are situated in Moirang sub-division. The population of Bishnupur and Moirang sub-divisions as per the 1991 Census are 91,781 and 88,991 respectively.
Manipuri Meiteis constitute the largest population segment followed by tribals and Meitei Pangals (Manipuri Muslims). There are also splinter groups of Biharis and Marwaris.
There are two CD blocks: (i) Bishnupur CD block with its HQ at Bishnupur and (ii) Moirang CD block with HQ at Moirang Khunou. The sub-divisions are under the charge of SDOs and CD blocks under BDOs, while the circles are under the charge of SDCs.
There are six assembly constituencies: 24-Nambol, 25-Oinam, 26-Bishnupur, 27-Moirang, 28-Thanga, and 29-Kumbi. The number of gram panchayats is 24 (12 in each block). There are also four municipalities: Nambol, Bishnupur, Ningthoukhong, and Moirang.
